George H. Ackerman - Leading Business Man - Died Early Wednesday Morning - Built Ontario Bay House and May Cottages In Grove - In Mercantile Trade For Quarter Century
George Henry Ackerman one of the leading citizens and business men of Lacona, passed away at his home on Salina St., in that village Wednesday morning about 7 o'clock. Mr. Ackerman had enjoyed usual health until last fall when he found that he was suffering from cancerous growth. An operation prolonged his life several months and he was given every attention by his immediate family. For several weeks he was a patient at Crouse Irving Hospital in Syracuse. So strong was his vitality and heart action that he gained strength and was brought home. The first intimation that his friends had of an impending end to his earthly activities was the announcement by himself that he had but a short time to live and that he would not be here this summer. During the last two years he has been engaged in lumbering in Parish and took the usual interest in the affairs of the Ontario Bay House, managed by his son.
Mr. Ackerman was the son of John and Catherine Ackerman and was born March 14, 1857 at Newville, below Little Falls. N.Y. With his parents as a boy he moved to the Black Lake country in St. Lawrence county and later to Boylston, the family settling near Boylston Center. He was educated in the district schools and in Sept., 1879, when 22 years of age, he was married to Miss Ola Servis, of Boylston, who with one son, H. W. Ackerman survives. Another son, Frederick, died in 1890, aged 8 years.
Mr. Ackerman's business career began in 1886 when he ran a grocery cart for J. S. Robbins & Son for four seasons and then opened a store where his nephew, Elmer E. Ackerman, is now in business. He continued in this business for ten or fifteen years, three of which he was in trade at Adams Center. Mr. Ackerman was always a ready dealer not alone in merchandise but frequently disposed of his stock. Fifteen years ago he purchased the Bishop grove on Ontario Bay and began the development of this tract as a summer resort. Nine years ago he built the Ontario Bay House which became one of our most popular summer hotels. He was also interested in lumbering a 900 acre tract in Redfield. Mr. Ackerman was a Maccabee, carrying a $1000 Insurance, an Odd Fellow and a member of the M. E. Church.
The funeral will be held Friday at 2 o'clock at the pleasant home where he had spent so many companionable hours surrounded by his family. Rev. E. D. Carpenter and Rev. W.J. Hart will officiate, burial in Woodlawn cemetery.
