He was born May 4, 1847, in Ketsch, Duchy of Baden, Germany, and passed away at Rochester, Minnesota, on April 15, 1925. He was a Civil War Veteran.

He enlisted Feb. 16, 1865, and mustered out Jan. 20, 1866 as Pvt. Co. C, 46 Illinois Infantry. He was a member of the G.A.R. (Grand Army of the Republic).

Julius was the last surviving of the 8 children of Ambrose and Theresa Sauer. He came with his parents to Freeport, Illinois, in 1857, and the family moved to Benton County, Iowa, in 1868.

He was a pioneer merchant in Ida Grove, Iowa, Ida County. In 1878, Mrs. Sauer formed a partnership in the hardware
business with his brother, Martin Sauer, first locating at Reinbeck, Iowa, until 1883, when they both moved to Ida Grove, Iowa. They were both associated in the same business under the name of Sauer Brothers until 1900 when Julius Sauer retired from the firm and went to LeMars, Iowa, where he went into business with his brother, Magnus Sauer. Six years later he went to Hazelton, N.D.

Since retirement from active business, Mr. Sauer has resided in various places having returned to Ida Grove in 1919 and remaining here a part of 2 years with his daughter, Mrs. Katherine McDonnell. He lived in Rochester the past 3 years.

He was married Nov. 27, 1871, to Mary Kirchmer of Benton County, Iowa, who survives him, together with the following children, Mrs. E. S. Brechwald and Mrs. Rose Whitten of Rochester, Mn.; Mrs. Katherine McDonnell of Ida Grove, Iowa; Mrs. Adeline Stebbins of LeMars, Iowa; L.A. and Edwin Sauer of St. Paul, Minnesota.


Funeral services were held at Rochester, Mn., at St. John's Catholic Church, with a squad of American Legion members acting as pall bearers, and a detail of G.A.R. veterans as honorary escort. The American flag was draped on his casket.
