Civil War Union Army Officer. He began his Civil War service with a commission of Major in the 115th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on June 126, 1862, having been instrumental in helping raise the regiment with Colonel Robert Emmet Patterson. At the August 26, 1862 engagement at Bristoe Station (a precursor to the Second Bull Run), he received a severe wound in the left arm that incapacitated him for months. The subsequent campaigns the 115th Pennsylvania participated in decimated the officer's of the regiment, and when Francis Lancaster had recovered enough to re-join his men in February 1863, he was promoted to Colonel and commander of the unit (Colonel Patterson having resigned). His tenure at the head of the 115th Pennsylvania would prove to be short, for in the May 3, 1863 Battle of Chancellorsville, he was shot in the head and killed while leading his men in a charge of the Confederate lines.
