Indian Wars Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Corporal in Company, D, 5th Cavalry, US Army. During a patrol at Milk River, Colorado, September 29, 1879, D Company of the 5th Cavalry was suddenly attacked by a group of Ute warriors. While taking position to defend themselves, Corporal Murphy exposed himself to hostile fire in order to provide covering fire for his fellow troopers. For Gallantry in action, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on April 23, 1880.
