US Congressman. An important figure in the mercantile business, he was member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives, (1791-95, 1801-03, 1806-08) and served in the Massachusetts State Senate, (1809-11). In 1812, he was elected as a Republican to the Twelfth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Barzillai Gannett, serving until 1813. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed his mercantile pursuits until his death at age 69 and was the father of Congressman James Carr.
