Musician. Born in Toronto, Canada, he was a jazz composer, arranger and pianist. From 1941 to 1948, he worked as an arranger for the Claude Thornhill Orchestra, Gerry Mulligan and Charlie Parker. In the 1950s to 1960s, he collaborated extensively with Miles Davis, recording and performing. During the 1970s, he worked in free style jazz rock idioms releasing an album of his arrangements of music by Jimi Hendrix titled "Plays the Music of Jimi Hendrix" and arranged soundtracks for feature films. In 1983, he formed the Gil Evans Orchestra, collaborated with David Bowie and recorded a live CD with Sting, featuring big band arrangements of songs by The Police. His album "Bud and Bird" won the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance in 1989. He died in Cuernavaca, Mexico.
