Mar W. McGregor, M.D., of Howard, CO, formerly of San Francisco, CA, died March 30, 2007 as the result of injuries received in a single-car rollover accident on U.S. 50 east of Texas Creek 17 days earlier.
He was born Jan. 31, 1913, to Dr. Donald Alpine McGregor, M.D. and Bertha Pendexter Watson of Beaver, Utah. Dr. McGregor was educated at Dixie State College of Utah, St. George, UT. (Associate of Arts degree); Stanford University, Palo Alto, CA. (Bachelor of Science degree) and Stanford Medical School (Doctor of Medicine). After serving his internship and residency at Mt. Zion Hospital, San Francisco, he started practice as a plastic surgeon at Kaiser Hospital during World War II. His specialty was treatment of burn victims and reconstructive surgery. An innovative procedure he developed for cleft palate repair bears his name. He served seven years on the American Board of Plastic Surgeons and was chairman in 1974. He was president of the California Society of Plastic Surgeons in 1973-74. As a renowned plastic surgeon he spent many of his latter years on the lecture circuit teaching the latest in plastic surgery procedures.
In 1978 he retired in Santa Rosa, CA. after a 32-year association with St. Francis Hospital, San Francisco, where he most recently served as Chief of Surgery. He and his wife, Patricia, moved in 1985 to Buena Vista, CO, where, for more than 12 years, they lived a "snowbird's" life, traveling in their motor coach, residing in Yuma, AZ in the winter and Georgia in the spring. In 1998, they moved to Howard, where, in 2004, they discontinued their travels because of health issues. Dr. McGregor was a member of the American Association of Plastic Surgeons, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, California Society of Plastic Surgeons, and Stanford Alumni Association. He enjoyed reading, sketching, gardening and "fixing" things. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church in Salida and a loyal supporter of The Gideons International. Donations in his name may be sent to The Gideons International (gideons.org) or to the Collegiate Range Gideons Camp, 8154 W. U.S. 50, Salida, CO 81201.
Dr. McGregor was married to Patricia (Pat) Wark Smith of Newington, GA, who died in the March 13, 2007 auto accident. His first wife, Mona Valerie Reber, predeceased Dr. McGregor in 1974 because of complications related to breast cancer.
Survivors are his sons, Robert McGregor, Jackson, WY, and Bruce McGregor, Mill Valley, CA; daughter, Kathy McEvoy, Petaluma, CA; stepsons, Lt. Col. Joseph W. "Jody" Smith, retired, Buena Vista, CO, and Mike Smith, Newington, GA; and two grandsons.
Memorial services for Mar and Pat McGregor will be held 9 a.m. June 2, 2007 at Temple Baptist Church, 509 F St., Salida, CO.
