Actor. He was a 20th-century English actor who appeared in several films and television series. He was best known for his recurring role of the grocer Alf Roberts on the long-running television series "Coronation Street." He appeared in the role from 1961 to 1963, in 1967, and from 1971 to 1999. Besides the role on "Coronation Street," he appeared in a host of guest one-episode television roles, which included "Doctor Who," "The Saint," "Crossroads," and "The Avengers." For his role on "Coronation Street," he was awarded the OBE and a street was named in honor of him, "Alfred Roberts Wind." After having his second heart attack and performing in almost 2,000 episodes on "Coronation Street" in 37 years, his character was written out of the series by dying. Although he appeared with well-known film actors, he had small character roles in about ten films, with half being uncredited. He died suddenly of a heart attack while walking down a public street. Starting in 1949 for three years, he served in the Royal Air Force as an air traffic controller, before an acting debut at the Byre Theatre in St. Andrews, Scotland and then with Esme Church of the Northern Theatre School in 1951. Besides acting, he was a recognized watercolorist after studying at Leeds College of Art and being a member of the British Watercolours Society. As part of the "Coronation Street" 40th anniversary celebrations in 2000, a heritage plaque in honor of him was unveiled outside the Granada Studio. He was married and the couple had six children.
