Officer Serna began his career with the El Paso, Texas Police Dept. on June 30, 1989.
Officer Serna was working off duty at a Walmart Store. He stopped a man in the parking lot who had walked out of the store with $139.00 coat. The man shot Serna in the head with a .38 caliber pistol. As he fell, Serna managed to fire three shots into his assailant's chest and abdomen. Both men were later declared dead at the hospital.
Serna had recently returned to the police force after serving in Operation Desert Storm.
Serna 29, was survived by his wife and three young sons.
