Religious Figure. He was the first Bishop of the Episcopal Church to be consecrated on American soil, and the first to be consecrated after the Anglican Church of North American transitioned to the Episcopal Church after the American victory in the Revolutionary War. He became the first bishop of the Baltimore, Maryland dioceses, which was established in 1780. In November 1800, when the United States Senate opened its first session in the newly established capital of Washington, DC, he gave the first prayer and invocation, and served as Senate Chaplain for the session. After he died in 1816 he was interred on his family property in Croome, Maryland, but was re-interred in 1898 to the Washington National Cathedral, which was still under construction.
