First Governor of the Colony of Vancouver Island (1849-1851), which became part of British Columbia, Canada in 1866. When Blanshard arrived in the frontier colony in March 1850 he was treated rudely by Hudson's Bay Company Chief Factor James Douglas, who had wanted the appointment. Provided with no home or office and disputed at every step, Blanshard despised life in in the colony and resigned after only a year and retired to England.
