The Mourning Soldiers statue
Birth: unknown
Death: unknown

The somber sculpture of 'The Mourning Soldiers' by Emil Krieger stands watch over 44,000 WW1 German soldiers buried at Langemark, nearly 25,000 of whom are unidentified and are buried in a common grave. The statue was inspired by a photograph of four soldiers from Reserve Infantry Regiment 238 at the funeral of a comrade in 1918. The soldier second from right in the photograph was killed in action two days later. (bio by: David Conway)
