Knowles J. Bangs, Sr. was one of the the children born to Jonathan Bangs and his wife Betsy Boswell. Knowles worked as a farmer all his life in Waldo County, Maine.

Knowles was united in marriage twice during his lifetime: first, in Freedom, Maine on October 27, 1830 to Abigail Clark. Knowles and Abigail were blessed with the birth of at least four children during their 26 year marriage:

Abigail H. Bangs Weymouth
Caroline Bangs Smith
Knowles Bangs, Jr.
Flora Ella Bangs Bessey

Knowles was left a widower at the age of 51 when his wife Abigail passed away at the age of 46.

And second, in Freedom, Maine on December 25, 1856 to his sister-in-law Ann S. Bragg Bangs, widow of his brother James L. Bangs. Knowles and Ann were blessed with the birth of a daughter in 1860 that did not survive infancy. Knowles and Ann were married for 24 years, when Knowles was again left a widower when Ann passed away at the age of 71.

Knowles and his first wife Abigail Clark are said to have had 10 children. Research is still being done to confirm this data.
