He married Jacqueline von Bayern, Comtesse de Hollande, Zélande et Hainault in 1422 an was styled as Comte de Hollande, Zélande et Hainault as a result. Upon the death of his brother, Henry V, that same year, he was named regent for his infant nephew, Henry VI. He was divorced in July 1428 by Papal decree and married Eleanor de Cobham. A patron of literature, he donated the nucleus of its collection to the Bodleian Library at Oxford, now called Duke Humphrey's Library. In 1441, in an apparent attempt to influence the monarch and maintain power for her husband, his wife was arrested on a charge of practicing witchcraft against the king.
