King of Laos. After the death of his father, he ascended the throne of the Kingdom of Luang Prabang on April 15, 1904. A strong advocate of French rule, he refused to cooperate with advocates of Lao independence, and as a result was deposed in 1945. The following year, the French restored his reign. Then in 1949 the French created the unified Kingdom of Laos and installed him as its king. When he became too ill to govern competently, he appointed his son, Crown Prince Savang Vatthana, as regent. His son succeeded him on his death in 1959. Sisavang Vong's ashes were interred in a stupa at Wat That Luang in Luang Prabang.
