Actor. Considered one of the most gifted and beloved actors of his generation, he won the Academy Award for Best Actor in "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" (1931) and "The Best Years of Our Lives" (1946). He also received much critical acclaim for his work in "The Barretts of Wimpole Street" (1934), "Les Misérables" (1935), "Anna Karenina" (1935), "Anthony Adverse" (1936), "Death of a Salesman" (1951), "The Bridges at Toko-Ri" (1954), "The Desperate Hours" (1955) and "Inherit the Wind" (1960). He earned the New York Critics' Award and a Tony Award for his Broadway efforts opposite his wife, actress Florence Eldridge, in "Long Day's Journey Into Night" (1956). Before becoming an actor, he served in the U.S. Army during World War I (WWI) as an artillery lieutenant and worked as a banker. For his contributions to motion pictures, he has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, located at 1620 Vine St.
