World War I Medal of Honor Recipient. He served in the United States Army during World War I as a Private in Company C, 9th Infantry, 2nd Division. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery near Medeah Ferme, France, on October 3, 1918. His citation reads "Pvt. Bart, being on duty as a company runner, when the advance was held up by machinegun fire voluntarily picked up an automatic rifle, ran out ahead of the line, and silenced a hostile machinegun nest, killing the German gunners. The advance then continued, and when it was again hindered shortly afterward by another machinegun nest this courageous soldier repeated his bold exploit by putting the second machinegun out of action." Besides his Medal of Honor, he received a Silver Star with Oak Leaf Cluster and a Purple Heart. He has two military grave markers. The original marker was ordered in 1961 and has his date of birth as April 15, 1875, making him age 39 at the start of World War I in 1914. He enlisted May 1, 1917 and was discharged August 13, 1919.
