Civil War Union Major General. Graduated the United States Military Academy in 1842. Served as an officer in the 7th United States Infantry during the Mexican War, being so severely wounded at the Battle of Cerro Gordo that he had been left for dead. Continued to serve in the Army after his recovery up to his resignation in 1855. From then until the Civil War he was a successful banker in Minnesota. On October 2, 1861 he re-entered the Army, being appointed as Colonel and commander of the 1st Minnesota Volunteer Infantry, which he led at the Union disaster at the Battle of Ball's Bluff, Virginia. In early 1862 he was promoted to Brigadier General, US Volunteers, and commanded a brigade in the II Corps during the Peninsular Campaign, and the Battles of Second Bull Run and Antietam. At the Battle of Antietam, while leading his brigade in the brutal fighting around the Dunker Church and in the West Woods, he was severely wounded and incapacitated from further field service. He returned to active duty in July 1863, having been promoted to Major General, US Volunteers in November while recuperating. He successively commanded the Department of Philadelphia, Union operations in the Texas Gulf Coast, Military Districts along the Mississippi and the XIII Corps, all of which were non-active Theatre of Operations. He resigned his commission in May 1865. (bio by: Russ Dodge)
