Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Graduated from the USMA in 1818, and served in the Engineer Corps in various positions during his long Army career. When the Civil War started he was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Corps of Topographical Engineers. He was subsequently promoted to Colonel and served as Chief of the Bureau of Topographical Engineers. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Regular Army on March 13, 1865 for "long, faithful and meritorious services". He was a Great-Grandson of Benjamin Franklin, and the brother-in-law of Maj. Gen. George G. Meade.
