US Senator, Presidential Cabinet Secretary. Appointed, then duly elected, to serve as a Senator from Connecticut to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Senator Nathan Smith. Served from 1835 to 1839. Appointed as United States Postmaster General in the cabinet of Martin Van Buren serving from 1840 to 1841. Again elected to the United States Senate in 1843, but a severe illness and a challenge to his credentials prevent him from actually assuming the seat until 1844. Served his second term in the Senate from 1843 to 1849.
