Mary Elizabeth Leader Hovis, 97, of York, died on Sunday, July 1, 2007 at the Dallastown Nursing Center.

Born in York on January 27, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Guy A. Leader and Beulah (Boyer) Leader. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond S. Hovis.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 7 at the Etzweiler Funeral Home, 1111 E. Market Street, York, with the Rev. Diane G. Wenthe officiating. A viewing will be held from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Salem Union Cemetery, Jacobus.

Mrs. Hovis was retired from the former Raymond Hovis Flower Shop in York Township, which she owned and operated along with her late husband, for nearly 50 years. As a young woman, she taught fifth grade in Yardley, PA from 1930-1933. She graduated from York High School in 1928 and received her teaching certificate for elementary education after graduating from West Chester Normal School, now West Chester University, in 1930.

While her husband was teaching in Millersville, she was active in the Faculty Wives Campus Club and was a charter member of the Village Book Club. She was also active in Red Cross drives during World War II. After moving to York, she became a charter member of York Quota Club and later served as its president. She was active in the PTA while her children were in school and served as a Democratic Committeewoman in York Township.

Mrs. Hovis is survived by two sons and their wives, Raymond L. and Lorraine Hovis of York and Guy L. and Joyce Hovis of Easton; a daughter, Susan L. Hovis of Red Lion; five grandchildren, Michelle Hovis, Michael Hovis, Steven Hovis, Kristin Hovis, and Julie AckermanHovis; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, George M. Leader of Hummelstown and Henry B. Leader of York; and a sister, Jean Eisenhart of Hanover.
