John Henry Burrill was the oldest son of Jacob Burrill and Rachel Panelia Bennett. His first wife was Llewellyn Forristall (3 children by this marriage). She also died in Hawley. His second wife was Jane Colburn, with 2 children by that marriage. Jane is also buried in Hawley. John Burrill fought in 30 Civil War battles as part of the 2nd New Hampshire Regiment. He later served as a justice of peace in Minnesota, and was a member of the Union Church in Hawley. He died of a heart attack. The following was written of him in "Journey Back to Hawley": "He was a man of deep convictions which sometimes made him appear formidable and aloof, but always there was sympathy for the needy and the suffering." His posterity is indebted to him for the fine example and rich heritage he left for us, including a large packet of letters written from Civil War battlefields. Other Information: born in Abbott, ME Member of GAR Post # 103 (L. H. Tenney) in Moorhead, MN died 6/13/1906 in Hawley, MN After the War he lived in Hawley, MN
