Painter, Illustrator. Austrian-born leader of the Munich School of German Romanticism. He is noted for his fantasy paintings and domestic scenes, depicted with strong lines and soft, muted colors. He was also active as a muralist. Schwind was raised in Vienna, where he led a carefree youth while haphazardly studying art, music, and philosophy. He was a close friend of Franz Schubert, whose songs he frequently illustrated for publication; his sketches of the composer and his circle are among the most valuable documents of Schubertiana. In 1828, following an unhappy love affair, Schwind moved to Munich to pursue an art career, later becoming professor of painting at the Academy there. His murals for the palace of King Ludwig I of Bavaria (1832 to 1834) brought him commissions throughout Germany, while his book illustrations ("Robinson Crusoe", Grimm's "Fairy Tales") were praised in America. In 1857 he co-designed stained glass windows for Glasgow Cathedral in Scotland. His other works include "Schubert and His Friends", "The Singing Contest", "Cupid and Psyche", and "The Seven Ravens and their Faithful". Schwind's last major projects were the murals for the entrance hall of the Vienna State Opera House, which he executed from 1863 to 1867.
