He was first married in Feb. 1879 to Flora Adelia Huston, daughter of L. W. Huston, one of the oldest and best known settlers of southern Iowa. She died in March 1881 following the death of their only child two days previously. He was again married July 17, 1901 to Miss Lou Hart in Gardner, Ill, who died Nov. 28, 1930.
Survived by nephews George F. Gray and Robert P. Rees; mother-in-law Mrs. Ella K. Hart; sister Mrs. Carrie Day of Lincoln, Neb.
He was a power in politics, influential in press association matters, state and national, an extensive traveler, having visited practically every country in the world. He was active in fraternal organizations (Masons, Knights Templar and Modern Woodmen) and the Illinois State Historical society.

The son of a widely known newspaperman William and his wife Mary LaForge Rees. Thomas was apprenticed as a printer in the office of his brother at Keokuk, Iowa, at the age of 13. He was publisher of the Illinois State Register in Springfield, IL, from 1881 to 1933. In 1902 he was elected for one term as State Senator.
