As a young man he was a storekeeper in Pike County, Illinois where he was elected Circuit Court Clerk and later to the state legislature. In 1856 Hatch was elected the first Republican Secretary of State in Illinois and served two terms. It was with deep regret that the citizens of Springfield learned that Hon. O. M. Hatch had passed to his long home yesterday at his residence. Owing to his prominence in former political circles, his career as a state official and his integrity as a man, his life is worthy of a more than passing notion.
Mr. Hatch's death was not unexpected by his immediate friends and relatives, but the news was received by his less intimate acquaintances with evident suprise and pain. He had been in feeble health for the past seven or eight years and since the beginning of the present year, had failed rapidly. He passed away peacefully and quietly yesterday morning with the family gathered around his bedside.
Ozias M. Hatch was born in Hillsborough, Hillsborough county, N. H., April 14, 1814. His father, Dr. Reuben Hatch, removed to Pike county in this state in 1835 and Ozias followed him the following year.

One term in State Legislature in 1851.
Two-term Secretary of State under Governor Bissell and then under Governor Yates.
