Assemblyman Bee Dies in San Antonio
Veteran Legislator, 57,
Was Vacationing in Texas
Assemblyman Carlos Bee (D-Hayward), a 20 year veteran of legislative service, died Friday in Baptist Hospital in San Antonio, Texas, it was announced in Sacramento. He was 57.

Assemblyman Bee, a former resident of the Los Angeles area, had served as Speaker Pro Tempore of the Assembly in every session controlled by the Democratic Party since 1959.

He was in Texas for a vacation and to attend a national leadership conference, Jack Johnson, Press Secretary to Assembly Speaker Leo McCarthy, said in Sacramento in announcing the death. He reportedly suffered a broken rib in a fall earlier this week. Johnson said he did not know the cause of Mr. Bee's death at this time.

Born in Berkeley, Mr. Bee attended grammar school in San Marino, high school in South Pasadena and was graduated from UC Santa Barbara.

He was elected to the Assembly from Hayward in 1954 after serving as a Hayward City Council member for four years and as Mayor of Hayward fro two years.

Mr. Bee died just three days before he was to begin his 11th term in the Assembly, but not as speaker Pro Tem, a post he had held longer than any other Assemblyman. He announced 10 days ago that he was giving up the post, which involves presiding over Assembly sessions when the Speaker is absent. He won reelection to the Assembly on November 5 with 56.5% of the vote.

Assemblyman Bee, a veteran of World War II. leaves his wife, Jean; four daughters and one son.
