Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He was employed as a clerk when he enlisted the Union Army at Rochester, New York. Commissioned Major of the 8th New York Volunteer Cavalry, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on June 10, 1863, and commanded the regiment until he was mustered out on February 14, 1865. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "meritorious services".
