Father-in-law of President Ulysses S. Grant, Dent was a soldier and a fur trader. He owned White Haven estate in St. Louis, which was later known as Grant's Farm. Dent died at the White House and his funeral was conducted in the Blue Room. Frederick was the son of George Dent (1756-1812) and Susanna Marbury Cromwell.
