John Henry Morehead, sick with Typhoid Fever, attempted to make it home to Greensboro, North Carolina. Riding upon his horse, he made it as far as Martinsburg, Virginia. Despite the loving care of a family there, J. Henry died ten days later. On his deathbed, he sent wishes to his wife to meet him in Heaven.
His body was prepared for burial by strangers who saw to it that he had a decent burial in Martinsburg. After the war ended, his body was brought back to Greensboro. His funeral was held in the Old Methodist Church with burial in First Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
His wife, Susan Lindsay Morehead, did not marry again after the death of her husband. Carved on their monument is the handshake symbol symbolizing marriage. Nearby is the grave of their only daughter, Minnie.
