Judge James Matheny was a son of Charles R. Matheny & was reputedly one of the greatest orators of Illinois, both in the political field & in the trial courtroom. In early life he was a close friend of Abraham Lincoln, & was a groomsman at Lincoln's marriage.

Matheny was commissioned Lieutenant Colonel of the 130th Illinois Volunteer infantry & served as Judge Advocate, holding military courts during the Civil War. During later years, he was County Judge of Sangamon. His popularity was unequaled & his funeral was said to have been the largest in Springfield since that of Abraham Lincoln.
