Newspapers of 1925, for example, were filled with smiling pictures of the young man after his arrest for speeding in Omaha. He said little to the press, save that his hobby was boats. Later he added fast cars and women to his list of interests.
Judging from his love life, he did not exaggerate. His first marriage, which lasted 30 years, was to an older widow whose son was only ten years younger than his new stepfather.
