Obituary - Philip F. Cannon passed away Tuesday, September 22, 1998. He was in his 85th year.
Born May 26, 1914, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Philip was the son of Espey Telle and Alice Farnsworth Cannon. He married Gwendolyn W. Cannon (later divorced).
He graduated with high honors from the University of Utah with a B.A. in business. He went on to Stanford University on a two-year scholarship and graduated in 1937 with an MBA degree. His early career included management consulting with McKinsey and Company, a New York management consulting firm. Later he served as a vice president for Hoover Worldwide Company with assignments in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
In 1962 he was sent to England for Hoover and remained with them until 1967 when he became a founding partner of the management consulting firm of Coloney, Cannon (London), Main and Pursell (New York). The company was later acquired by Towers Perrin, a multi-national consulting firm. He remained in England for over 25 years. In 1987 he moved to the Salt Lake Valley and in 1989 he joined Groen Brothers Aviation, Inc. as director of manufacturing responsible for planning and developing the company's manufacturing program. He was active in the company until his death.
He was an avid and skilled horseman who played polo on the University of Utah polo team. He served in the United States Cavalry School as a horse officer. He often rode to the hounds during his residency in England. He cherished his German Shepherds as family pets and trusted companions. Philip was an ardent patron of the arts and was a member of the Utah Opera Company Board for six years.
Philip is survived by a daughter, Carolyn Miller, (Eric) of Riverdale, Maryland.
A memorial service will be held at the Larkin Mortuary at 260 East South Temple on Saturday, September 26, 1998 at 2 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Utah Opera Company, 50 West 200 South, Salt Lake City, Utah 84101.
