Major League baseball player. Born in Argo, Illinois, he was a first baseman and made his debut for the Cincinnati Reds on April 18, 1947. For fifteen seasons, he played with the Cincinnati Reds (1947-57), Pittsburgh Pirates (1958-59), Chicago White Sox (1959-60), and Los Angeles Angels (1961). He was an All-Star four times (1953-56), hit .300 or better eight times, and led the National League in fielding percentage for first baseman for five straight seasons (1951-55), a Major League record. He concluded his career with a record of 1766 hits, 279 home runs, 1028 runs batted in, a .298 batting average, and a .993 fielding percentage. In 1962, the Cincinnati Reds retired his uniform number 18 and he was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 1982. After retiring as a player, he was a hitting coach for the Cincinnati Reds which were the World Series Champions (1975-76). He died of heart failure at age 63 in Cincinnati, Ohio.
