Her first credited film role was in "Life in the Raw" (1933), followed by her debut as a leading lady in "Jimmy and Sally" (1933). She was nominated for an Oscar for her role in "Dead End" (1937) and won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for the film "Key Largo" (1948). Her other films included "Stagecoach" (1939), "Crossroads" (1942), "The Babe Ruth Story" (1948), "Hard, Fast and Beautiful" (1951), "The High and the Mighty" (1954) and "The Stripper" (1963). For television, she received an Emmy Award for Best Actress in a Drama on "Producers Showcase" (1956) and also appeared on "Playhouse 90," "Wagon Train," "Dr. Kildare," "The Love Boat" and "Murder She Wrote." For her contribution to the motion picture industry, she has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
