Actor. He was a English actor of the 19th century who was the second son of the great Shakespearean actor Edmund Kean. Born in Ireland, he received his education at Eton College. Although intended for a different profession, he turned to the stage against his father's wishes. In 1850 he leased the Princess Theatre in New York and had his greatest success in a series of Shakespearean revivals staged there, giving his best performance in the title role of Shakespeare's Hamlet. From 1863 to 1866, he toured the United States, Australia, and Jamaica. In 1842 he married Ellen Tree, who achieved a reputation as a comedienne and established a notable acting school after her husband's death. He played Iago to his father's Othello in Edmund Kean's last performance, in his 1833 production of Shakespeare's Othello.
