Canadian Military Officer. A 1909 graduate of the Royal Military College, Crerar served during World War One as an officer with the Canadian Field Artillery. Rising through the ranks, he was serving as a Brigadier General at Canadian Military Headquarters in England when World War Two began. In 1940, Crerar was appointed Chief of the General Staff of the Canadian Army, a post he held until late 1941 when he was given command of I Canadian Corps. In 1944, he was re-assigned to command the 1st Canadian Army, a position he held until his retirement in 1946.
