Son of Noah and Catherine Underdew who moved to Ohio from North Carolina between 1861 and 1863. The family lived in Washington County, Ohio, during the 1870 US Census. In 1880, Henry and his father lived together in Athens, Ohio. Henry married Clarissa (Willis) Sloan, a widow and his neighbor in Athens, around 1886 and moved to Columbus.
