Hall of Fame Major League Baseball Player. Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, he was nicknamed "Orator Jim" making his professional debut as a outfielder for the Middletown Mansfields on April 26, 1872. A very accomplished performer, he played for 23 seasons with the Middletown Mansfields, Boston Red Caps, Providence Grays, Buffalo Bisons, Washington Senators and New York Giants. He ended his career with 2643 hits, 62 homeruns, 1203 runs batted in and a .311 batting average. He died of pneumonia and was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1945.
