Physician and Master at Caius. After attending Norwich Grammar School, he studied medicine at Edinburgh, entering Caius College, Cambridge in 1786. He graduated with an M.D. eleven years later. In 1801, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. He visited Italy for two years, returning in 1803 to become Master of Caius, and continued to practice medicine. He is credited with promoting enrollment based on academic merit as opposed to familial rank or position. A year later, we was promoted to vice-chancellor. He was ordained in 1811 and became a doctor of divinity, moving to Collenham in Cambridgeshire. One year later, he was appointed a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London. He would return as vice-chancellor a second time in 1827. He bequeathed Heacham Lodge in Norfolk to serve as a home for future Caius masters.
