Opera Singer. She was a gifted soprano of Victorian England. She rose from poverty in rural Ireland to great fame as an operatic prima donna, performing at La Scala Milan, Covent Garden London, and other places in sold-out concerts. A high point in her career, she sang Italian operatic arias along with the Irish ballad "Kathleen Mavourneen" for Queen Victoria and 500 guests at Buckingham Palace in June of 1849. She toured Europe, Britain, Ireland, 45 cities in the United States, Canada, Chile, Peru, Hawaii, Australia, India, Singapore, Java and elsewhere, during the nineteenth-century, giving concerts. On October 8, 1857 she married William Avery Bushnell, who died the following July in France. She returned to singing, yet died three years later. She was very successful monetarily. Her biography "Catherine Hayes: The Hibernian Prima Donna" was published in 2000 by author Basil Walsh.
