Opera Singer. Born in Lanuvio, Italy, he was one of the most renowned tenors of his time. Lauri-Volpi studied in Rome and made his debut in Viterbo singing in Bellini's "I Puritani" in 1919. His success was immediate and he triumphed in Rome the same year. From 1922 to 1933 he sang at New York's Metropolitan Opera. His best known performances include "Turandot", "Aida", "Guglielmo Tell", "Il Trovatore", "Tosca", "Rigoletto", and "Luisa Miller". Although he retired from the stage in 1959, he continued to appear in occasional recitals and benefit performances until shortly before his death. In 1972 he sang during the celebration of the anniversary of Barcelona Lyceum. Lauri-Volpi was also an accomplished writer, his books including "Misteri della Voce Humana," "Cristalli Viventi" and "El Equívoco." He died in his sleep in Burjassot, near Valencia, Spain. His epitaph reads: "Mi Cuerpo a España, Mi Corazón a Roma, Mi Alma a Dios" (My Body to Spain, My Heart to Rome, My Soul to God.)
