British Royal Marines General. He joined the Royal Marines in 1947 and spent the next 36 years in the service of Corps. His posts varied from action in Malaya in 1952, Housemaster of the Royal Marines School of Music, Instructor in the NCO's School, RMA Sandhurst Commander, and service at the Brunei Revolt. In 1973, he was awarded the Star of the Order of the British Empire and promoted Major General Commando Forces Commander in 1979. He is most noted for the war to recover the Falkland Islands from Argentina. As the active military chief, he commanded the land forces and received the surrender of Argentine General Mario Benjamin Menendez in Stanley, the territory's capital on June 14, 1982. For his services during that campaign, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth. He retired from the Royal Marines in 1983 and is also the recipient of two orders of the British Military Cross.
