Soldier. Born in Bourgneuf, France, he was trained in the law before being made a colonel of a free corps of the French Army. His success at the Battle of Villeneuve in 1793 earned him the rank of brigadier general. Following the French victory at Fleurus in 1794 he was promoted to general of division. He was placed in command in Italy and took control of Calabria and Apulia. In 1800 he led a corps in the Marengo campaign, captured Milan, and defended the Po valley. For his service he was made a knight of the Ordre national de la Légion d'honneur and created a count. In 1808 he distinguished himself in the capture of Barcelona but was recalled in disgrace two years later after numerous allegations of misconduct were leveled against him. In 1813 he was appointed governor of the fortress of Kehl. In 1815 he joined Napoleon upon his return from Elba. He was appointed commander of the Young Guard Division of the Imperial Guard. He died of wounds received during the Battle of Waterloo.
