The Farm of La Haie Sainte was a key position in the battle of Waterloo. The French finally wrested it from its German and Dutch defenders in the evening of 18th June, but it was already too late to assist the French position. 2000 Frenchmen died in the attack, and only 42 survived of the 1,000 defenders. A total of over 4,000 cavalrymen and soldiers were said to have been buried in the communal grave opposite the farm after the battle.
