Murder Victim. She gained fame as a prostitute catering to the sophisticated clientele of West Germany in the post-World War II society. Born Maria Rosalia Auguste Nitribitt, a novel, three movies and a musical have been adapted from her life story. After her mother could not provide for her and her sister, the siblings were placed in a foster home. While in the foster home, she was allegedly raped at age eleven and, shortly after that, began her career as a teenaged call girl. She had little formal education but was determined to receive one, being self-taught. Besides German, she spoke English and French. She became very wealthy. By 1956, she moved into a luxurious apartment and was driving a black Mercedes-Benz 190SL, which has been nicknamed Nitribitt-Mercedes. On November 1, 1957, she was found dead in her apartment, and the coroner's report estimated that she had died from strangulation and a head wound three days earlier. A suspect was brought to trial but acquitted in July 1960. Allegedly, police evidence was poorly collected in an attempt to hide the names of her clients. The crime remains unsolved.
