Daughter of Samuel Wales Doggett and Harriet Wotten, Gertrude Glorvina Doggett relocated to Dubuque, Iowa when she was a young woman where she taught in the school of a brother, Simeon Locke Doggett. She then moved to Chicago where she continued as a teacher for at least four year and studied drama; taking on a variety of roles in Chicago's theaters. She married Benjamin Franklin Norris in 1867 and had five children: 1) Grace Colton (1869 – 1869); 2) Benjamin Franklin, Jr. (1870 – 1902); 3) Florence Colton (1871 – abt 1872); 4) Albert Lester (1877 – 1887); 5) Charles Gilman (1881 – 1945). In 1884, the family moved to San Francisco where Samuel Wales Doggett, Jr., another of Gertrude's brothers, had relocated in 1850. In 1894, Gertrude and B. F. Norris were granted a divorce in San Francisco.
