Philippine statesman. Born while the Philippines was a Spanish possession, he graduated from Saint Thomas University in 1882, studied law, and became an attorney in Manila. From 1898 to 1900 he was editor of the Manila newspaper La Patria, and he later became editor of the first legal journal to be published in the Philippines. In 1908 Ocampo represented the United States at the Interparliamentary Congress held in Berlin, Germany. After serving as Resident Commissioner he served in the Philippines Legislature, and was a member of delegations that traveled to the United States to advocate for Philippines independence. Ocampo had been an advisor to Emilio Aguinaldo during Aguinaldo's Revolutionary Government, and he continued to advise Aguinaldo after the Philippines became a United States Territory and Aguinaldo began cooperating with the US government. (bio by: Bill McKern)
