Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He rose from a 1st Lieutenant and Adjutant of the 17th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry to Lieutenant Colonel and commander of the 119th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious conduct and services in 1865 in storming the works of the enemy in front of Petersburg, Va."
