US Continental Congressman. He was admitted to the bar in 1778, opened a law practice in Beverly, Massachusetts and was a member of the State House of Representatives, 1782 to 1785. In 1785, he was elected a member of the Second Continental Congress, serving until 1788. He served in the State Senate in 1790, 1791 and 1794 to 1797. He was judge of the court of common pleas for Essex County in 1794 and commissioner to codify the laws of Massachusetts in 1795. Dane County, Wisconsin was named in his honor.

Inscription

The following inscription is engraved on his monument (believed to be written by honorable Judge Story, of the Supreme Court ) In memory of the honorable Nathan Dane, LLD, a revolutionary statesman, and eminent jurist, the author of the Ordinance of 1787 for the government of the West Territories, the author of the Abridement and Digest of the American Law; the author of the Dane Professorship of Law in Harvard University. His private life was distinguished for simplicity, integrity and dignity. His public life for wisdom, fidelity and patriotism. He lived and died a Christian. He was born on 27th December of 1752. He died on 15th February 1835. His farm belongs to his country; let the gratitude of future ages cherish it.
