ARTHUR L. HAIGHT - In Memoriam
by Wilbur Hugus
The many friends of Art "Inky" Haight will be saddened to learn of the passing of this outstanding and UNUSUAL individual on November 21. He died suddenly and unexpectedly at his home at the Pine Knoll Kennels near Portland Mills in Elk County, Pennsylvania, where he and his devoted wife, Bertha, had been conducting boarding and training kennels for over 10 years since moving there from Johnsonburg, Pennsylvania. Art was a retired employee of the New York and Pennsylvania Paper Company, but had bred, raised, trained and campaigned bird dogs for over 50 years and was well known in the Great Lakes, New England, and Mid-Atlantic areas; especially in the major grouse dog leagues. He was regularly called to judge in grouse trials because of his vast experience. He was one of the few remaining senior citizens of this great sport which includes such celebrities as the late Hall-of-Famer Herb Cahoon, and organizers such as Joe Williams, Ed McKean, and prominent trainers such as Gene Galloway, Carl Beattie, the Tuttle brothers Larry and Rich, and Michigan trainers like Roy Strickland and Jack Stuart. Besides his devoted wife Bertha, he leaves three daughters. Mary Jane, Cleva, and Margaret. The field trial fraternity will surely miss this outstanding personality and grouse trialers throughout the United States extend profound sympathy to Bertha and all the Haight Family.
